Is Alex a person devoid of the feelings of pity, empathy and love?
Is he a person with mental illnesses?
Or is he just a normal person lacking morals because of the environment he lives in?
To be able to answer these questions, first we have to look into the time he lives in. At the time there are researches being made on the condition of the youth, why they were acting violent, if it was “Devil’s work”, if there was a need for a proper teaching, if children should be raised with music and its soothing effect etc.
As we know Alex lives in a violent century. Streets are full with gangs of children ready to harm anything or anyone in the nights. Elder people try to avoid nighttime outside activities. This gives us a sign of the importance of the influence he is receiving from the environment he lives in. He might be thinking that it is the normal thing to do, because every other young man he knows is acting the same way that he is.
We can tell that he is definitely aware of that his actions are not morally right, by his own words from the book; “I see what is right and approved, but I do what is wrong”. Which makes us believe that he has a moral compass, he just does not choose to bother using it.
The fact that he takes pleasure while committing a crime, might be a sign of a psychiatric disorder. However, this shouldn’t mean that he is a creature that should be reformed to become a person like one of us.
Don’t we all have a bit of Alex inside of ourselves?
