HOW MUCH OF A CLOCKWORK ORANGE ARE YOU?

Where does the “Clockwork Orange” term come from?

An approach for examination of the term clockwork orange is; while the word clockwork is seen as mechanical and man made, orange is seen as a representation of organic and natural things. Also in Nadsat language “orange” word means “man, person” originating from Malay language (orang:man, orang utan: forest man).

In the book we see that Alex, the problem child, is acting inhumanly; beating, robbing, raping innocent people and enjoying the moment while at it. After getting arrested and spending 2 years in prison; we see Alex in a much miserable place, going through an experimental medical procedure which will lead him to deter from enjoying crime.

The way of government reforming Alex’s thought process is working by killing his right to choose. He becomes a man acting “properly” without being able to choose so.

This process is forcing a human’s nature to act not by it’s nature.

Goverment is taking a person into their hands and building a control system over him. After the treatment, he starts to act control-fully as opposed to the way he was acting pre-treatment. These controlled behaviours of his are being controlled by him, without him choosing to do so.

Because of these given reasons, Alex refers himself as a “Clockwork Orange”, a natural being which is imposed and transformed by man made forces.

So… Do you think that we have to go through severe medical treatments like Alex, to feel like a Clockwork Orange built by the society? Or would you refer to yourself a Clockwork Orange, tried to be reformed by your surroundings?
